Abstract

Objective: To analyze the mortality of subjects hospitalized in a weaning and rehabilitation center (WRC) and to identify whether frailty and quality of life before intensive care unit (ICU) admission are related risk factors.

Materials and method: A prospective, analytical, longitudinal study was conducted. Subjects admitted to the WRC with a complete record, assessed on their health status before ICU admission, and discharged from the center (alive or deceased) were included in the study. Epidemiological data were obtained from the medical records and interviews conducted during hospitalization. Frailty and quality of life were assessed using the clinical frailty scale and the Euro-Qol-5D-5L, respectively, taking as reference the values of the month before ICU admission.

Results: A total of 53 subjects discharged from the WRC, with a median age of 66 years, were evaluated. The median hospital stay in the ICU was 35 days. Out of the total, 53% of the subjects were weaned, 64% were decannulated, and 30% died. Multivariate analysis showed age and frailty as factors associated with mortality, and decannulation as a protective factor of mortality.

Conclusion: Our findings revealed that frailty before ICU admission, and not the quality of life, is associated with higher mortality. A mortality of 30% was observed.
