Physical therapy in a girl with 85% AB-B burns in a pediatric intensive care unit: a case report

Abstract

Introduction: Burns are preventable injuries caused in living tissues by the action of various physical, chemical, and biological agents. The distribution and depth of the burn clearly predict the patterns of deformity and joint contractures, which requires the establishment of therapeutic goals and the early initiation of physical therapy. Therefore, the objective of this case report is to describe the physical therapy in a girl with 85 % AB-B burns during her stay in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Case presentation: A previously healthy 4-year-old girl was admitted with an initial diagnosis of burns caused by direct fire, affecting 90 % of her body surface area, with associated grade 1 inhalation syndrome. Subsequent evaluation determined that the burned area was 85 % (AB 65 % - B 20 %). The incident occurred at home and, two days later, she was referred to this institution.

Conclusion: This study describes the physical therapy in a patient with burns during her stay in the pediatric intensive care unit. The treatment was early and intensive to prevent complications, restore function, control pain, and promote healing.
