Swallowing maneuvers used in the treatment of oropharyngeal dysphagia
Abstract
Rehabilitation of patients with oropharyngeal dysphagia includes different therapeutic interventions, such as swallowing maneuvers and exercises. These interventions aim to produce long-term changes in the swallowing physiology and allow a safe and effective swallowing. The objective of this study is to describe the most commonly used swallowing maneuvers: supraglottic swallow, super-supraglottic swallow, effortful swallow, Mendelsohn, and Masako maneuvers. As these exercises are performed voluntarily, the patient is required to have an adequate level of attention and understanding to learn, remember and do them according to indications. Although these maneuvers are frequently used in clinical practice, there is no enough evidence to support their long-term effectiveness.
