Validation of the Argentine version of the Patient-Specific Functional Scale in subjects with musculoskeletal disorders
Abstract
Objective: To validate the Argentine version of the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) for musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb (UL) and lower limb (LL) by measuring the test-retest reliability, validity, and responsiveness.
Materials and method: An observational, prospective, longitudinal study was conducted. Functionality was assessed at baseline using the PSFS, Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), and/or Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS). On subsequent assessments, the Global Rating of Change (GROC), PSFS and DASH/LEFS were used.
Results: A total of 352 subjects were recruited between August 2017 and January 2020. Of the 336 subjects who were analyzed, 165 had UL and 171 had LL disorders. For the test-retest reliability, the global intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.61 (0.48 – 0.71), the UL ICC was 0.70 (0.52 – 0.81), and the LL ICC was 0.51 (0.30 – 0.67). The minimal detectable change was 2.85 (CI 95%). For the construct validity, the Spearman correlation coefficient was -0.41 (PSFS/DASH) and 0.37 (PSFS/LEFS). For the responsiveness, the area under the curve was 0.928 (CI 95%, 0.874 – 0.98). For the interpretability, the minimal clinically important difference was 2.2 (n= 186): for UL group, 2.2 (n=86) and for LL group, 1.71 (n=100).
Conclusion: The Argentine version of the PSFS showed moderate construct validity, acceptable test-retest reliability to UL disorders, and excellent responsiveness.
