Implementation of a mechanical ventilation weaning protocol for a child with spinal muscular atrophy type 1
A case report
Abstract
Introduction: Weaning from mechanical ventilation in a child with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 is a challenge. Clinical impairments may lead to weaning failure. The aim of this study is to report the outcome of the implementation of a mechanical ventilation weaning protocol, as suggested by the literature, for a child with spinal muscular atrophy type 1.
Case presentation: A 5-month-old male patient was admitted to the intensive care unit due to respiratory failure and required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). When the diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy type 1 was confirmed, weaning from IMV was initiated, as suggested by the literature. A tracheostomy was performed after 31 days of admission and two extubation failures.
Conclusion: The implementation of a weaning protocol, as suggested by the literature, was practicable. However, the patient required a tracheostomy and IMV at the end of this study.
