Prevalence of employment in subjects with amputation in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina

Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of employment in subjects with amputation and congenital deficiencies in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As secondary objectives, we aim to describe clinical, socioeconomic, occupational, and prosthetic characteristics and how they associate with employment and change of job.

Materials and method: We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study through a telephone or in-person survey from July to December 2019. Members of Amputados Sin Fronteras and patients from a private rehabilitation center of the province of Buenos Aires were invited to participate.

Results: A total of 97 subjects were included; none was excluded. Of sample, 52.6% were employed, 72.2% were male, 43.4% had comorbidities, 45.4% experienced a phantom limb, and only 3.1% had phantom pain. Current age, age at amputation, educational level, functional level, presence of phantom limb or comorbidities, and hours per week of prosthesis use were associated with employment.

Conclusion: The prevalence of employment in our sample is 52.6%. Subjects with transfemoral amputation are mainly part-time workers.
