Positive Pressure Extubation Technique

Abstract
Extubation is the removal of the endotracheal tube (ETT) in patients who are weaned from mechanical ventilation in critical care units. At least two procedures for removing the ETT have been described: the traditional technique, which consists of performing endotracheal suctioning during cuff deflation and then removing the tube from the airway; and the positive pressure technique, which will be described below. According to some studies, the positive pressure technique is safe in terms of peri-extubation complications and is effective at eliminating pharyngeal secretions above the endotracheal cuff. It is also a feasible technique in critical patients weaned from mechanical ventilation.
