Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical-demographic characteristics and functional results in subjects with stroke after being admitted to a neurorehabilitation clinic.

Materials and methods: A serie of retrospective cases of post-stroke adults who completed hospitalization was analyzed. Clinical-demographic variables, the values of the scale of clinical outcome variables (COVS), the functional ambulation category (FAC) and the walking speed at discharge were registered.

Results: Forty one patients were recruited, of which 73% were men with a mean age of 64 years. 51% presented injury in the right hemisphere and 63% were of ischemic origin. They were admitted with a median of 41 days from the diagnosis and the hospitalization time was a median of 140 days. Significant functional gain (p= .00) measured with the COVS (mean of 29, SD: 15 IC95% 24-33) was recorded. On admission 73% of the subjects did not walk (FAC = 0), at discharge 80% achieved some type of walking (FAC> 1) and 68% went on independent walking or with supervision (FAC> 3). 44% achieved community walking speed.

Conclusion: This study allowed to know the clinical-demographic characteristics and the functional results reached after the rehabilitation. The effectiveness is reflected in significant functional changes and they did not prove to be related to age, functional severity at admission, and to the number of days from diagnosis upon admission to the institution.
