Psychometrics properties of the Clinical Outcome Variables Scale (COVS) in subjects with traumatic brain injuries

Abstract

Objective: To translate and cross-culturally adapt the Clinical Outcome Variables Scale (COVS) into Argentine Spanish for subjects with traumatic brain injury (TBI), and to report its psychometric properties, including interrater and intrarater reliability, as well as construct validity.

Materials and methods: The cross-cultural adaptation of the COVS into Argentine Spanish included the initial translation by two translators, synthesis and consensus between versions, back-translation into English, and review by an expert committee. Following a pilot test in 2009, the final version used for validation was obtained. Reliability was evaluated through the use of video recordings. The variables associated with assessing the construct validity of the Argentine Spanish version of the COVS were the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM).

Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the total scale was 0.99 (95% CI = 0.98-1) for interrater reliability. Independently, the ICC for rater 1 was 1 (95 % CI = 0.99-1) and for rater 2 was 0.99 (95 % CI = 0.98-0.99). Cronbach's alpha coefficient was excellent, with a value of 0.97. The correlation between the COVS and the BBS was acceptable (Sρ = 0.830; p = 0.001), and the correlation between the COVS and the FIM was moderate (Sρ = 0.587; p = 0.001).

Conclusion: The Argentine Spanish version of the COVS provides reliable and valid measures for subjects with TBI.
