Survey on the ventilation mode selected for nocturnal rest and the relevance of sleep reported by professionals in charge of adults patients during mechanical ventilation weaning
Abstract
Objective: To describe the characteristics of the nocturnal ventilation mode used by professionals in subjects with mechanical ventilation (MV) during the weaning phase.
Methods: An observational, prospective, and cross-sectional study was conducted using online surveys, which included 290 professionals (respiratory and physical therapists and physicians) in charge of adults patients during the weaning phase from MV in hospitals across Argentina. The professionals were contacted only once via email, social media, and WhatsApp with a formal invitation to participate in the study. The invitation included a link to the survey on Google Forms and the option to give consent for the use of their responses for research purposes.
Results: A total of 290 professionals were included. A slight trend to prefer controlled modes over spontaneous modes was observed in this population (54.44 % vs. 45.56 %, respectively), regardless of work experience.
Sleep quality in subjects with MV was considered «very important» by 84.5 % of professionals. More than 70 % of the surveyed professionals did not monitor nocturnal events associated with MV. Additionally, 55.7 % considered that ventilation mode settings are the main cause of nocturnal patient-ventilator asynchronies.
Conclusion: The professionals surveyed who work in Argentina with patients in the weaning phase from MV prefer controlled modes as the nocturnal ventilation mode over spontaneous modes.
