Argentine version of the “Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation” questionnaire: Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and psychometric evaluation
Abstract
Objective: To conduct the translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and psychometric evaluation of the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) questionnaire into Argentine Spanish for patients with distal radius fracture (DRF).
Materials and method: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation process was based on the guidelines described by Beaton et al. The following psychometric properties were evaluated: ceiling and floor effect, internal consistency, construct validity, and sensitivity to change. Six hypotheses were proposed to analyze construct validity, by correlating the PRWE –and its domains pain and function– with the Numeric Pain Rating Scale and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire.
Results: The final Argentine version was completed by 30 patients with DRF, which confirmed it was clearly understood and cross-culturally adapted. In the evaluation of psychometric properties, no floor or ceiling effects were observed (4.5%), and the internal consistency of the PRWE was acceptable (Cronbach’s alpha: 0.95). In the analysis of construct validity, 50% of the proposed hypotheses were confirmed. Effect Size and Standardized Response Mean values > 0.8 were observed, which indicated the questionnaire is sensitive to change.
Conclusion: The process of translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and psychometric evaluation of the PRWE was successfully conducted for its use in patients with DRF in the Argentine population.
