Changes in independence and functional mobility in children with subacute stroke.
Retrospective descriptive study
Abstract
Objective: To describe changes in independence and functional mobility in a sample of children with neurological sequelae secondary to subacute stroke.
Materials and method: Observational, descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study. Patients aged 4 to 18 years, with a diagnosis of subacute stroke, admitted to a Rehabilitation Center between 2/1/2005 and 2/28/2023 were included. Functional data were evaluated at admission and discharge with the Functional Independence Measure (WeeFIM) and the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS).
Results: Thirty-seven patients were analyzed, of whom 17 (45.9%) had stroke secondary to arteriovenous malformation. When comparing the FMS score between admission and discharge, the differences were statistically significant in the 3 distances evaluated (p<0.001). The median WeeFIM scale score was 46 (RIQ 36 - 55) at admission and 86 (RIQ 74 - 95) at discharge [median change 32.5 (RIQ 19 - 46) points; p<0.001].
Conclusion: In this sample of children with subacute stroke, favorable changes were observed in the percentage of functional independence and in the acquisition of independent walking in short, medium and long distances.
