Abstract

Hand orthoses are made for specific therapeutic purposes, such as immobilization of painful or unstable joints, correction of deficits in amplitude or deformities, compensation of motor deficits, and joint support and stability.
Due to the importance of orthotic devices in the pediatric population, the objective of this study is to describe the procedure to make a cock-up hand splint. For instance, a cock-up hand splint can be used on a painful wrist and/or a wrist with inflammatory joint activity in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.
This device is included in pediatric rehabilitation protocols; therefore, it is essential to accurately define the therapeutic purposes and adapt them over time. Being informed about the different thermoformable materials and fabrication techniques will allow us to achieve these purposes.
