Do we adopt non-pharmacological measures to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia?
A survey to respiratory therapists in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires
Abstract
Objective: To know the adherence of respiratory therapists working in adult intensive care units (ICU) to non-pharmacological measures to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia in public and private health institutions in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
Materials and method: A descriptive online survey was conducted between October and December 2018. Respiratory therapists working in adult ICUs in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires were included in the study. They were invited to participate using the Survey Monkey® tool.
Results: A total of 97 surveys were analyzed. Of them, 80.4% were completed by respiratory therapists and 19.6% were completed by respiratory therapy coordinators. Only 12.8% of respiratory therapists adopted non-pharmacological measures to prevent VAP.
Conclusion: The poor adherence to VAP prevention measures, as shown in our survey, reflects the gap between the daily practice of ICU respiratory therapists and the recommendations of evidence-based guidelines.
