Abstract

Objective: To know the prevalence of reasons for consultation and characteristics of subjects admitted to an outpatient physical therapy clinic of a public hospital in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.

Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study was performed. Data was collected from subjects admitted to the outpatient physical therapy clinic and treated during the afternoon shift. The distribution of the variables was assessed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test.

Results: A total of 1029 subjects were admitted. The most prevalent physiotherapy diagnosis was non-specific and degenerative pain, with a total of 514 subjects (49.9%) and a female-to-male ratio of 2:1. The most prevalent medical diagnosis was low back pain. Of the total, 528 subjects were discharged. Of them, 60% were discharged between the sixth and tenth session. Subjects who were unemployed had the highest dropout rate, which was 60%. Operators were the most prevalent occupational category.

Conclusion: This study allowed us to know the prevalence of reasons for consultation and characteristics of subjects who were admitted to the outpatient physical therapy clinic of a public hospital in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The most prevalent reason for consultation was low back pain. In our sample, most were female, Argentinian, aged between 41 and 64. Operators were the most prevalent occupational category.
